This is the average to savage podcastwith Paul Greno everyone in anyone, athletes sets and much more. What's up, everybody, and back for another episode of the average savage podcast. GotAnother special guests, Jamal Herring Jamel. How's it going? Is Good, true churcher. So let's just like jump right into it. Can you tellthe audience a little about yourself? Of course, I seven, image herring, born and raised in New York. I was United States Marine from twothousand and three to two thousand and twelve. Also represented the United States and thetwo of the twelve Olympic Games and I'm currently signed with top ring promotions. Perfect. So what made you get into boxing and how did you getinto it, and what age are you? A man's crazy story. I actuallywas got to boxing because I was doing poorly in school and so ofcourse, when you're great, the terrible you can, you can't play othersertain sports. Because I was I was big and I was big on basketballand I made, actually made the team, but I had to be advocate cutbecause of my grades. So instead of just doing nothing around, youknow, for the season amount that time, my mom decided one of my oneof my close friends invited me down to it. Jim I was aboutlike fifteen, fifteen years old, you know, and you know, wentdown down just to try it out and I'm just sticking with it and youknow he regard today. But they eventually I did get my grades together athinking that, you know, I was slacking. All bad thing, butyeah, it was. It was just it was just, you know, one of the one of those things that just happened. Yeah, you're backin college and noble. We'll get to that later too, right. Andso, yeah, you had a kind of a weight start, like usuallyboxers or starting like probably around like eight to ten and you're like fifteen seventyeight. Yeah, so what did what kind of difficult like things, thatchallenges did you have? Like being older than like learning? I had tobasically, you know, it was different. Damn just systems, a lot differentfrom know, what you're seeing on TV, because most time you don'treally see at the time, you don't see emer boxing on TV, soall you see what it was the own the professional level, you know, coming up. So I had to basically, you know, learn how to act. Damn system. You know, it runs for the most part, but you know, he boxing kind of came. It came naturally, eveneven a even at the late start, you know, came Nashville especially. You know, even as a Marine I had to take how to take breaksfrom boxing, you know, numerous times without employee. Two Times that arat. So I had to place, you know, come back and youknow, you know, play catch up. But, like I said, youknow almost did some something right because even before a late start and theyonly had under a hundred fights as amateur and I still made the Olympic team. Gosh it. So yeah, right after high school you weren't sure whereyou want to do and you can listen to the marine. So how didthat all come about? One of more close friends was on. He wasa year older than me. So he had enlisted right right that he graduatefrom high school. And you know, all the time at that that time, I wasn't really, you know, big or really interested in like goingcollege, but I know I had to had to do something. Yeah. So, you know, I found out that the Marine Corps was on.You know, they had a boxing program and, you know, just somethingI could do for career, as a career. Also coming out of highschool. I didn't want to just, you know, stay around, andI'm in New York because you know, some kids, when they get ahigh school with out of playing is, stick around too long and they didbasically lose track of what they want to do. So I know. Sothose I graduated high school, you know, I went straight to the Marine Corps. That on following October. Now, what was that experience like? Beingin the Marines and then participating in their boxing program? That's a bookcampstuck. I was still I was actually still seventeen years old. Graduates,I was on seventeen round enlisted and I had to spend my eighteen birthday andboot camp and you know who. They made it very interesting for me andmy birth done my birthday. But Um, you know, as time went on, I had to basically earn my way to to the team. Youknow, I was a ployee two thousand and five Iraq and after that, after that first employment, I went to a team, but I only wasonly stay there for a year because I called back again to get the plentyto Iraq once more. And but I'm...

...after my first listeners up, Ihad basically got station to Indian head, Maryland, which was a nonemployable andunit, and they allowed me to come back to, you know, thebox team full term and, you know, I just stuck with her from sincethen and now that's how I play catch up and earned my way toup to the Olympic trials and eventually then lift the team. Yeah, it'sawesome. So are like what made you go take that extra step, andyou're like, I want to train for the Olympics. I'll just basically tiredof seeing. I'm like, guys that I know, that that I thoughtin my heart I was better than that, was basically ahead of me, likeI was always like ranked, you know, top ten in the countryand you know, some people, some peoples are cool with that, butI thought, wow, I kind of seeing that, you know, guysthat I beat in the past was basically moving ahead of me. That's whenI decided, you know, let's take a limit more serious and, youknow, let's put forward and see what we'll see what we can really do. Now. While you were in the Marines, were you were you thinkingabout becoming a pro boxer after or they just happened, like after the Olympicsand stuff like that. I think everything is just happen you know, onthe fly. To be honest, like I wasn't, you know, butI was actually cool of being, you know, a marine, you know, like say Marineo's marine, but I was, you know, I wascool if I just you know, even if boxing didn't work out for me, you know, I still has something to fall back off side. wasactually cool with that. But it was until like the Olympics and I waslike, you know, I probably, if I've made it this far,I probably can take your further boxing. And that's when I started really thinkingabout, you know, going pro if for sure. And I know youwere an underdog in the US trials for the Olympics and sure and you cameout and you wont and you got the to go on to the Olympics. What was that like, just going to Olympics and winning in the US andall that stuff? It was a great experience, you know, like Isaid, I had to come like after leving trials. I didn't qualify forOlympics because, if you like, like it wasn't they change the system fromwhat it was, say back in like two thousand okay, like when youwanted, when you want the livy trials, you auto made was considered Olympian, but that wasn't the case. Yeah, you wouldn't let me trial. Youstill have to qualify the nationally, and my my first goal around,I didn't qualify. So I had to come back and face those same youknow, some of those same opponents that I had to deal with them duringthe trials and you know, I knew, you know, at that point, you know, they were more focused and like really, you know, gunning for me. But you know, I end up, I end upwinning the old twelve USA nationals to earn us, earn a second chance toqualify for the Olympic team, and that's when I went to arm Rio,Di Jian Arrow and around, I believe was may too, thousand and twelve, and I I got a bronze medal and I qualify the you know,a spot. are in the spot basically can compete in the Olympics, andthat's what they had basically. Also made me that one of the team captains, which was you know, it was great honor and you know, itwas a good experience. You know, just being out there not only justyour your teammates whatever, but just other athletes in general. Nine that evenjust from America, but from other countries, you know, like like you, same bolt and I, you know, I meant guys like that. Soit. I mean it was a fun time. I got, Ithink. Of course, we didn't get I didn't get the metal and Olympics, but you know, the overall experience is great. Yeah, now, what was it like being like the older guy? They're like? I knowthat you said they named your captain was at like one of the reasons whythey based play me cat because of my marine class rance and, you know, leadership, and they've seen that I have a lot of leadership traits now. Was One of the memory main reasons while I was I was chosen asa captain. But I'm, like I said, for most of our Iclicked it everybody, you know. Well, I basically got everybody, as welldid gail, together as one, because at the same time, youknow, we're all come up from different backgrounds, the country as it is, you know, and different upbringings. But I was able to, youknow, find something that I had in common with each individual and use that, you know, to build a relationship off and we all got along it. Maybe still get along. Like you see me on twitter, you know, you see I'm almost, you know, still talking to each and every lastedone of my teammates. So you know, we're still you know,we're still clicking with still rocking and we're...

...just wishing each other the best ofluck. And what's the sex success in my own past as pros now?Yeah, for sure. So after the Olympics and you decided to make thejump to the pro rank. So how that? How that all go downmy memory? At the time, like I said, I had to goat a debate between if I want to stay, staying as a marine,or get out. Because after Olympics, my my listening, my second listen, was basically come until close to an end. So I had heard mydecision and that's when I gave Mike Staff for a call from Cincinnati. I'lltell him that I wanted to go pro. You know, you just invited themin Cincinnati and then, you know, I went from there or sign withoutHyman, and I just kept it moving. Got You. So Doyou feel like your time as a marine helped you as a professional boxer whenit comes to training and tough situations during the fight? Oh, of course, because I'm boxing is more mental than physical, and I believe if youcan tell it, which is the stuff that I've seen it dealt with asa marine in the box, and to me that's the fun. You know, I'm not. I'm not afraid of hard work. Yeah, like Isaid, it's just it comes now. That's why I say it can't.It comes naturally to me. Like I'm not afraid of hard work. Iknow, I love learning new things. You know, I followed directions prettywell and, like I said, you know they, like they all said, hard work beas talent, you know, especially if one talent isn't working ashard as you are. Yeah, for sure. So you're seventeen andtwo. Now you're playing on September fourteen. Your opponent's coming off a big win. His only losses to a world ranked fighter. So what do youexpect to see come flight night? Like I said, I'm not I'm notso worried. I mean, I give the more respect, but I Iwatch. I watch the last two fights. You know, shout out to myboy, tooker con Toka, was one of the guys that was onit that was helping US train. What to get clarified back in a mantwo thousand twelve and you know, I known Toba for years but, likeI said, I took to southball. I'm the soutball. I picked upthings that Toba was doing. I know that the guy doesn't like know toomuch pressure, just like my matters, like prush at all. That wasthe definitely is like virus sizes and people forget. Like you know, he'sa natural feather way. I'm coming down from lightweight to super featherweight. Yeah, so of course I know I'll be the bigger man. You know, like I said, in the last fight with him against Ishmael Window, who'sactually will was also trained the partner in my my stable that I'm with now, the fight basically came down to the to knockgowns, and that's because hedid a lot of retreating me. Like I said, he gasses out thosetwo knockdowns. They basically on was worth of the deciding factor in the fight. But I don't see if I don't see it playing like that. Youknow, when I'm in there with him, I just feel like I have moreI have more tools. So I'm let me said, I'm looking forwardto a great night and plus, you know, I'm with top right now. Got To mention as well. I'm with top rank. I'm expected that. I'm actually expected to me Bob own later on today. But Um,you know, they bring also bring them the marines out. So you know, I'm a lot of backing. It's going to be a great atmosphere.I'm also on fighting on the same night as my umblelepic teammate Jose a verymarriage, who's defended his THEBC world title. Like I said, I'm just,I'm just, actually Scott. This is just to have fun, youknow, I'm not I'm not no pressure right now. I'm the training camp. I'm going to you know, if you like, if if people havebeen watching closely, I've been spawning with Terence Crossford, who's basically one ofthe path town best fighters in the world, and my just beast. I wouldjust spart yesterday together. You know, like I said, if you whenyou have that backing and super behind you, you should just really notuse really you really don't worry about what's to come. You know, longas you get prepared and handy up business and training camp. You know, the fight to me, like I said, the same thing of being a marinementality. The fight. That's the fun part, that's pretty easy part. You know, the hard work is already completed and, like I said, I'm in there with a chance carper every other day and we're working,we're going at it, you know. So I don't believe. I don'tthink that is anything and he can show me that. I haven't seen allright, all can't handle yeah, for sure. And you're going up forthe US be a super featherweight titles. So what does that? What's thatmean to you? That, you know,...

...if anybody knows, boxing, Usbaumis sanctioned under the IPF is. So that definitely puts me in theworld rankings and I believe, you know what the big one in and nowI'll be also be putting other you know, world rankings, sanction of bodies. So, like I said, this fight is very important to me.I said they they tyler rank has been coast. Mean they want be tothey want to stay. Want to see me to see. That's the reasonwhy they you know, the time. To begin with. They want tosee me to see. They love my starver and they love the fact thatI'm big with the military side. And then we know we are. Wehave we have great we have a lot of great plans ahead, but Ihave to get you know, I have to handle my business on my endand, you know, take care of business with moral day and, likeI said, but hopefully, hopefully by December, you know, because timerank is keeping us, you know, they problems. Ken Be busy atleast, but with at least three fights a year. You know, hopefullybody December and I should be going for a world title. But you know, one thing's, you know, one thing's first. I have to takecare of it into a moral day and then we'll just see what will happenfrom there. Yeah, for sure. And what did that mean to you, that all the Marines are going to come out to this fight? Oh, man, man's going to be crazy. Man, like you said, itwas one of the one of the main things that I to do.Yeah, you know, you know, finally become a reality to fight andyou know, in a venue full of you Nica Marines, and you know, maybe you know. I know. Well, I know for a facttoday, once I headline, you know, I'll even be able to bring outmore, you know, marines and probably fight on the you know, bring called basisself. So, you know, it's a great feeling, man likesay, to have that support and see that, you know, noteven just marines but fettermans in general was coming out to support me is alwaysa great because alays a great feeling. Man. Yeah, how many arecoming out so far right now? You know, like I said, there'ssomething about they said the venue holds about fourteenzero. They said at LAE atleast two thous marines and veterans are coming out alone, which is, itsounds, gone to be as and it's supposed to be a big Mat ofboxing likes things about like Levin twelve fights on the card alone, and so, like I said, it's goings guys of their atmosphere is going to be, you know, it's going to be crazy. But, like I said, I'm just looking forward to it and also people, people there's listening. You know, I'll be headlining on the ESPN plus portion of the card thatnight, so that's that's a big thing. You know that that tells me thattop rank has a lot of you know, trust in me to goout there and do some things and, you know, and bringing a lotof viewers to watch. Definitely I think the top rank ESPN partnership is likegreat for boxing. Right now right. So you seem pretty excited with thedirection your career is going into and I know you change trainers and top rankyou started, they started promoting you this year. So what made you changeeverything? And in the drop in weight classes also, I was making itfor us start. Will let's start with the weight. The weight class wasbecause you know me, man like you follow me for a while as well, like I was making one thirty five easy and I was actually doing itthe hard way when I was when I when I when I really found out, when I was changed over teams, I was out there, told meI was actually doing it the hard way, but I'm still making a relative easy. You know, I was always around my weight. But, Um, you know, they was looking at me. It was like, becauseI this is kind of Matats came from Terence himself. He was like aman that, but you wait and I was walking around like a wound.I usually walking around like around one hundred and forty five average. It's like, man, that's like fifteen pounds, man, you can, you caneasy make one thirty five. I told you. I thought he was talkingcrazy at first, but no one supposed. We yell more hooked up and Isee how, you know, I got with a real nutritionist and astramp coach. I actually made my last by actually made one hundred and thirtytwo. I believe, one thirty two and a half pretty easy and I'mask like I did it easier than when I was making one two hundred andthirty five, but a higher weight class, and I actually I was eating itthe day up my way in and I still felt good and I feltstrong. And if people seeing my last fight, you know I I stoppinga guy who hasn't been stopped in like six years. Like no, hewas like they kept telling me he was a durrible opponent. He supposed togive me a good test in some rounds, but you know, I made easywork with him, even when, even where I got cut over myright eye with a head but you know, I still bought thory. I'm aeasy work of it. So that's...

...what that's what the whim decided togo on down one hundred and thirty. But in terms of the team,I felt that. You know, I felt that. You know, no, there're spect anybody over there on the PBC side, but I felt that. You know, we were, we were on the same page at times. Like actually been told them that I had wanted to move out to thePetway, but it wasn't really trying to go that direction, Christ me.So it was like, you know, we would, it was bumping headsand they had one idea and I had another. Yeah, so I justfelt that, hum, I didn't like the way I was treated during mylast adding with them in last August. I felt that I actually won thefight and they're just like. I felt that I wasn't given to the fairtreatment and proper treatment during that whole build up. So, you know,it was no, it was no, like I'm mature, I'm older,I'm old enough, you know. Didn't you know, to do that?Things go. So I wasn't bitter, I did, but I just decidedthat, you know, I needed to make a change and you know, that's when I gave you know, Brian Bull, mcmactyre called personally and toldthem that I, you know, I would like to train with him,you know, you know, and move on and hopefully and go from there. Yeah, definitely. Now could you give like an insider perspective on likewhat camp is like for people that don't see you on social media? ManCamp Camps, because he's like, you guys have fun, though. Yeah, kept here with them. Is really to me is like, yeah,we're all under like one roof when we had that, when we had outthe card springs, but everybody's no egos involved. Everybody gets along with eachother, and you know we did. We just have fun, man,we just have we know, we just have like you know, everybody isgoing to help each other. We all like listen to one another and whatwe work hard, like you said. You See, man, we reallywork hard, like we're doing something every day for seven days literally, butwe're not doing it to the point where we're over training, but we're juststaying busy and keeping our bodies loose. Like you know, what might do, like a stuff like a take a bike ride or something on Sundays justto get out or whatever. Or went to Tado. We'll go do theincline and you know, and then just chill out rest of the day.But always staying busy. Is everyone gets along everyone, you know, everyonehas the same goal. We all want to see each other. You see, like I said, we can laugh and joke and have a great timeat the same time as well. Yeah, definitely. I know you have twoworld champions in your campus. When you, I know hooker was trainingyou guys while so I know you're trying to become the third soon, right, right. And Yeah, I got I just got lectured. It's funny, I just got lecture about two days ago. Man, you know mytraining that I was slacking the bed and he was like yelling like hey,we need to make we need another world champ. Being million. You're didthat close to it, so pick it up. So you know things likethat. You know, it just motivates me because, like I said,it's like you said, we're found with them and top ring behind me,believing to me, you know, you know, just basically becoming a reality. So you know, I'm really happy when I'm at and I'm just lookingforward to the future. Man, like I said, that's wire I camewait to get to this bike. You know, we got four weeks leftand I actually played on being a lot shopper and better than my last outingby far big it. Can't wait to see it. So I know you, like I previous said, you're you're in college now. So how areyou bouncing? Call its life and boxing training. I'm actually doing a lotbetter than I expected. You know, I'm taking it like obviously online course, for the fact that I'm always traveling, as you see, you know, most I'm always going, man, it's training camps, fights, wherever. But Um, you know, it's been. It's been actually, youknow, I took a while to it take it. It's a little bitof video. Thats just but now I'm actually like mctually motivated to start. You know, the next semester, you know, I'm taking Benite business manof major in business management. So, you know, because I want toalso, you know, even that after box I want to more likely stayinvolved with boxing some way in some form. You know, I've been taking Bunbusiness management courses. But Um, I mean, like I said, hasn't affected, it hasn't bumped in the way of my training, you know, because I usually, you know, do my own classes and my hownworkafter you know, at the hours I've after I'm training and things like that, and I still get the pope arrest that I need without being overwhelmed. So it mean, it's been. It's been good. I I said,I thought myself, I've never seen myself coming back to school and like Isaid, school wasn't my thing, man, like I said, I actually wasan under student in high school by...

...that, you know, my lasttwo peas in high school. But it's been but I still wasn't big onit. But, you know, coming back to it, you know it'sit actually is a good feeling. So the professors that you have now,do they know that you're like a famous professional boxer? scally the story onme and you know my career and things that needs. So they know whoI am, but, you know, at the same time, like I'mstill a student. Yeah, I don't get. I'm not getting axialtention. You got, you got you now what you're like? Main motivation for justlike boxing in general, is I want to be the next marine to wina world title. I think the last marine to win a world towers around, you know Dolly days. You Know Ken Norton and Leon Spins both actuallyactually beat Ali, but I think that was like the last time anybody whostarted as a marine when the world title. So that's Mylesman, my motivation, you know, just to my name out there and you know saying nowI was a marine who won a world title, because I'll my last oneivationOlympics was the fact that no marine made the Olympic team in boxing since onethousand nine hundred and ninety two on Oscar to the hogest team. You know, that was certain radius and the same year and in that same year andthe night was last time a marine when a national championship, and I compsaid as well. So now my next goal is to be the next marinewin a world title. The sitting goes in achieving them exactly is one goout of time. There you go. What's your most memorable fight to date? I'll probably say amateur wise, my fighting, my two fights. Wetwo fights and then we're taking place that during Olympic trials, wanting to onefight against Mike read and the next fight that every next day against Sosa. The fight with my read was on a back and forth right. I literallyone that fight by a single point, so huge. Just imagine how thatfight went. And then the fight book page or so so like you knowat the time for it was also was the man, you know, alltime national champion. You know he was. He was basically going through everybody, didn't you know? Remember? I remember loose. I was actually losinggoing into the third round. You know, I just rallied up and I beathim by a single point. So yeah, man, like those bikes, like you know, stand out to me. Now I'm just looking forwardto, you know, making both fights, you know, and as a progot you now. I got some fun in Fan questions. Are youready for those? Yeah, they're a little looser. So well, here'sanother boxing one. But boxing training or marine training? What's harder? MarineCo training, you know, like I said, like you know, ringsall about preparing you for, you know, the worst out there around the world. You know, boxing to me, like, since I said before, that's just the fun part. So I say marine coach training by far. Yeah, definitely. What's on your playlist before training, working out, before the fight? Man, that's crazy if people actually before like a surpies. I listened to everything, man, like I was just literally just listeningto Um Ellon John Rocking man, you know. But I got to keepit diverse because I can't listen to the same genre all day because I'll losemy mom but, you know, I say guy verse, like I gofrom Jay z the David Bowie and and like the very up the very nextsong, just like that. I I keep it. I keep it,you know, keep it interesting, you know, you just keep it onshuffle. Yeah, pretty pretty much, man, but you don't like youdon't like Cardi be though. Now it is a few songs on it thatI do like. So shod I gave up. She actually got he hasa few good songs that I likes. I give her that. There's ago from New York. You got like her. Right, right. Here'sthe scenario question. What's one movie? If you had one movie to chooseand you got to watch it on repeat for the rest of Your Life, when movie would have been sending Nella Man,...

Russell Crow? All right, they'regoing another boxing and I said that because, like I said, hewas an UN the dog, you know, he's like. I just like howyou point out house out, you know, and Hamate, and sometimesI still see myself under dog as as a professional. But like you know, he look look with them. He fought through and he's still achieved thisgoal to becoming a world champion. So, like cerele man, always plays outamount of fact. Arrol Spence, you know, a good friend ofmine. He calls me, he's he calls you some the relevant you know, because but he wants me. He also tells me. You know,he's actually one of my big supporters as well. So shout out the Arrow. But I'm yeah, he's been calling me CINERELEA. Man Says I'm damntoday. Yeah, that's it. It's what I didn't know right there. So, yeah, are you playing any video games right now? Right?Yeah, right now, Brown, you know, at the camp, becauseit's small, run my little loans Super Nintendo classic. Yeah, so,you know, US play that on my free time. Even playing punch out. You beat the game and yeah, I'm stuck on like the Japanese GuyRight now. Yeah, yeah, I think that wraps it up. Youwant to tell the fans in your supporters really can find you on social media. I was saying, for one, thank you for having me on here, Bro Anyway, you know, on and off the record whatever, butI say by me. Hit me up. Actually, any more questions that Ididn't get to answer today. They can find me on twitter, instagramat Samel herring. Sendu from send the firm request. You know, Jamelherring on facebook and, like I said, you know you're my witness. Youknow I'm us. I used to respond to everybody. So, likeI said, much love there with those for me and I give up backto those who. Yeah, probably the most fan friendly boxer right now.At your meal, Harry, appreciate its dry. Appreciate you coming up andgood luck September fourteen next fight. Hopefully that, like I said, thatbe down to fight. We'll talk about world, we'll talk all right, appreciate all.
